Daily Itinerary:

Sun, 16.09: Flight to Sofia.

Fly direct to Sofia Tel-Aviv Sofia:

On arrival an “relaxed tour” by bus:  The Boyana Church is a medieval Bulgarian Orthodox and a UNESCO World Heritage. Next the National Historical Museum of Sofia is Bulgaria‘s largest museum and founded in 1973. Drive to the hotel for check-in.

Full day tour Sofia: Walking tour of the city center: Explore the open-air museum of the Ancient Roman City of Serdica. The Sephardic Synagogue and is the largest synagogue in Southeastern Europe, one of two functioning in Bulgaria (with the one in Plovdiv) and the third-largest in Europe, dating back to 1909. Alexander Nevski Cathedral. Built in Neo-Byzantine style, it serves as the cathedral church of the Patriarch of Bulgaria and it is one of the largest Eastern Orthodox cathedrals in the world. The National Archaeological Museum, it occupies the building a former Ottoman mosque in the city, originally known as Koca Mahmut Paşa Camii, and much more. Overnight: Sofia:  

Tue, 18.09 (Erev Yom Kippur ערב יום כיפור ): Rila and Bansko.

Drive to the Monastery of Saint Ivan of Rila, better known as the Rila Monastery is the largest and most famous Eastern Orthodox monastery in Bulgaria. It is situated in the southwestern Rila Mountains, 117 km south of the capital Sofia in the deep valley of the Rilska River at an elevation of 1,147 m above sea level. The monastery is named after its founder, the hermit Ivan of Rila (876 – 946 AD), and today houses around 60 monks. Continue south to Bansko (925 m) located at the foot of the Pirin Mountains. Wed, 19.09 (Yom Kippur- יום כיפור  ): Plovdiv.

Drive to through the forest covered Rhodopes Mountain range down to the valley. Arrive at   Plovdiv. Plovdiv is an ancient city built around 7 hills, in southern Bulgaria. It’s one of Bulgaria’s best preserved old towns. Walking tour:  Explore the old town by foot and its center.

Thu, 20.09: Plovdiv- Monastery of Backovski.

Plovdiv. Carry on exploring Plovdiv, by foot and bus.

Afternoon: Drive via Velingrad to the Monastery of Backovski the monastery was founded in 1083.  It is also the burial place of some the clergy that Yad Veshem appointed (“(חסידי אומות העולם Righteous Among The Nations”. Part of the bigger story about the Rescue of 50,000 Bulgarian Jews, between 1943-1945. The most notable people behind the rescue were Dimitar Peshev and Exarch Stefan of Bulgaria and Kiril, Metropolitan of Plovdiv, who managed to overcome Bulgaria’s pro-Nazi bureaucracy and convince the then-tsar Boris III to stand behind Bulgarian Jewry. The deportations, set to take place after the arrival of the Holocaust trains on March 10, 1943, were never carried out.

Fri, 21.09: Veliko Tarnovo.

Drive  to Sipka the  Memorial Church dedicated to the RussianUkrainian and Bulgarian soldiers that died for the liberation of Bulgaria in the Russo-Turkish War, 1877-78. An amazing work of architecture. Onto Etara (Gabrovo) and explore this unique open-air museum of houses of Bulgaria and village life. Continue to Veliko Tarnovo (“Great Tarnovo”). Often referred to as the “City of the Tsars“, Veliko Tarnovo is located on the Yantra River and is famously known as the historical capital of the Second Bulgarian Empire, with its unique architecture. The old part of the city is situated on the three hills Tsarevets, Trapezitsa, and Sveta Gora, rising amidst the meanders of the Yantra. We shall explore the city by foot and by bus.

Sat, 22.09: Rose Valley- Koprivstica-Sofia.

Explore one of the many Tharician Royal Tombs located in The Rose Valley.

Continue to Koprivstica. (meaning “nettle“)  lying on the Topolnitsa River among the Sredna Gora mountains. The town boasts a large number of architectural houses most of which have been restored to their original appearance. It was here that the first shot of the April Uprising against the Ottoman domination was fired in 1876, and more  Continue to Sofia.

Sun, 23.09 ( Erev Succoth ): Flight home.

Transfer only to airport : Fly back to israel.
